Box Reuse.
A well kept secret at Cronig's is their wonderful fruit boxes. Most anyone
who moves regularly, saves holiday ornaments, or is looking to pack out
of season goods, would do well to ask for available boxes in the morning
before they get crushed.
Because fruit is so perishable, it is shipped in very sturdy cardboard
boxes, which unlike plastic, have the added advantage of "breathing".
This means the cardboard modulates moisture buildup. The ventilation holes
on the sides, top, and bottom, also enhance air circulation. In addition,
fruit boxes are designed so the lid fits completely over the bottom, hence
they are doubly strong and stack well too. These attributes make fruit
boxes superior for packing, stacking and shipping. Apple boxes are my
favorite size because they work well for bulky things; banana boxes are
great for shoes.
Often times the boxes still have contoured cardboard separators , or two
ply paper sheeting stuffed with shredded newspaper left inside. These
added treasures make great buffers when packing fragile objects or when
used as non toxic fire starters for the wood stove or fireplace.
The next time you need good boxes, ask at the courtesy counter if any
are available. Mornings are your best bet for ample selection.
